Late last year, the Picadome Neighborhood Association requested a safety audit from Lexington’s Traffic Engineering Division for Clays Mill Road and surrounding areas, prompted by concerns over traffic impacts from a zone change request. Following this, Traffic Engineers conducted a thorough assessment to identify safety issues. Council Member Dave Sevigny, along with a Traffic Engineering representative, attended the June 7 PNA Ice Cream Social and provided an update on planned safety improvements. To enhance pedestrian and traffic safety on Clays Mill Road, the following improvements are planned:
1. Pedestrian-activated crosswalk at Reed Lane on Clays Mill Road. This will feature a traffic light that cycles from yellow to red to safely stop traffic. An island in the middle of Clays Mill Road will provide a refuge for pedestrians crossing. Clays Mill & Reed
2. Pedestrian Crosswalk at Clays Mill/Harrodsburg Road Intersection: A new crosswalk will be added to the existing traffic signal, allowing pedestrians to safely cross both Clays Mill Road and Harrodsburg Road. Harrodsburg & Clays Mill
3. Curbing on McCubbing Drive: Curbing will be installed on both sides of McCubbing Drive where it meets Clays Mill Road to enforce the existing “right turn only” traffic flow.
*All three of these improvements are on a fast track, with an anticipated completion date during Fall, 2024.
