No Solar on Farmland (for now)
On Thursday, July 9, Lexington’s Planning Commission unanimously voted to reject a Council-proposed zoning policy change that would allow industrial-scale ground mounted solar facilities on agricultrually zoned land. It was recommended to remove these rural industrial developments from the proposal, stating that placing them in agricultural zones goes against the city’s Comprehensive Plan and Rural Land Management Plan.
What’s Next? This recommendation now goes to the LFUCG Urban County Council, which has the final say on the policy change.
The Meeting: Council will review the recommendation at their Work Session on Tuesday, August 18 at 3:00 PM in the Council Chambers.
How to Help: Public comment will be accepted at the start of the meeting. Because several Councilmembers still support placing solar on farmland, neighborhood voices will be crucial to preserving our rural and agricultural areas.
